What is CVT?

CVT stands for continuously variable transmission. Instead of shifting through a fixed set of gears like a traditional automatic, a CVT varies its gear ratio continuously to keep the engine in an efficient operating range.

For a buyer, the main difference is feel. A CVT can deliver smooth acceleration without distinct shift points, and it is often used to support fuel efficiency. Some drivers like the smoothness; others prefer the stepped feel of a conventional automatic.

Honda uses CVTs in many of its mainstream cars and crossovers, especially models focused on everyday efficiency and easy drivability. When shopping Honda vehicles, a test drive is useful because CVT response, engine sound, and simulated shift behavior can vary by model and drive mode.
